The Difference Between Editing and Retouching Your Wedding Photos

For anyone who isn’t a photographer or filmmaker, the whole post-processing can be a bit of a blur. To make it a little less confusing, let’s look at what the difference between retouching and editing is.

And about what is included in my wedding and handfasting photography packages, and what isn’t.

Reasons to Edit or Retouch Your Photos

I love creating beautiful photos, that will last a lifetime.

However, a wedding is a life event. Not a photos shoot.
We are not in the controlled space of a studio.

There, I can control all aspects of the photo. I can position the model and the lights. And I won’t start taking photos until make-up, hair, and clothing are all but perfect.

A wedding is none of that!

It is lively, the show keeps on rolling, it is like chasing after a runaway dog while trying to look elegant.
A wedding is just real life. And real life doesn’t stop to take a photo.

Real life is never poster perfect. So to create perfect wedding photos, post-processing is a crucial step.

What is the Difference Between Editing and Retouching

Editing is the first bit. Where I adjust things like brightness and colour balance, so your photo story looks beautiful and coherent.
You wouldn’t believe what the camera sometimes thinks things looked like!
I then go through and make sure the pictures are straight, cropped, etc. to look their best.

Retouching is the serious changes. It means removing or adding items or people. This also includes, tummy tucks, removing some scars or a double chin.

In a nutshell, editing is helping nature look its best, while retouching is creating a new reality.

How Much Editing and Retouching Will I Do

As a documentary photographer, I am all about life and the reality of it. The love, the fun, and the OMGs.
That is why editing is included in all of my work.

If you would like to have images retouched, I call in a fabulous specialist retoucher. Because, if we do try to improve on reality, we better make it as good as we can!

If you would like to know more about what I do as a documentary wedding photographer, here I explain the different photographer styles: 3 Steps to Choosing Your Perfect Wedding Photographer.

Or you can just ask me anything you want to know by getting in touch here. I look forward to hearing about your wedding and handfasting!
