Natural light or Natural Wedding Photographer: What’s the Difference?

The two terms natural-light and natural photographer describe different approaches to photography.

The are not interchangeable! They don’t even relate to the same aspect of photography.

Natural photography is a terminology used to describe an approach to staging photos.

Natural light photography is a terminology used to describes the approach to lighting the subject or model.

So what is natural photography?

Natural photography describes any approach that does not include posing people. The photographer documents things as they unfold, people as they naturally are.
It is a very unintrusive approach and aims at creating a storyline.

And what is natural light photography?

Natural-light photography means the photographer does not use flash.
While this can create a right-there-feeling, it might be harder to get enough light in the right places. This means the photographer has to carefully stage people to have the daylight were it is needed to create the planned photo.
It also means that photos taken in lower light conditions will be more grainy, giving them a retro film photo look.

So, which one am I: an natural light or natural wedding photographer?

I fall squarely in the bracket of natural wedding photographer, with a heavy peppering of natural light photographer.

Let me explain!

Your family and friends will recognise you even at the distance by how you walk, hold yourself and stand.
I am a visual storyteller. I want to create photos that look like the authentic relaxed and happy you.

That’s why I won’t tell you to sit up straight (that’s was your parents’ job!) or to put your hand in an exact spot on your partners shoulder I will, of course, give directions, but I won’t bend you into a pre-designed-one-size-fits-all-weddings mould and a shape you would never naturally be.

I love the right-there-feeling of natural light, so most of my photos will be done without flash.
However, I use flash when lighting conditions make it necessary.
I will not miss a photo or compromise on the quality of the photo because of the flash-or-no-flash question!

If this sounds like the style of wedding photos you would like, and the relaxed natural photographer you are looking for, get in touch!
