Outdoor Wedding Ceremony in England and Wales

3 great reasons to have an outdoor wedding ceremony

Are you wondering whether or not to have an outdoors wedding or civil partnership?

If you are in the UK, you are most likely concerned about what the weather will do on your big day. But don’t dismiss and outdoor wedding ceremony just on those grounds, there are great reasons of why you should get married outside in England and Wales right now.

1. We’ve spent enough time couped up indoors

Over the past two years of restrictions, we’ve watched everything that interests us on Netflix, caught up with the repeats of our favourite 1990s TV shows, and not even left the house to go to work because we worked remotely.

Most of us, simply yearn to be outside again. So why have your wedding ceremony locked away in a room?

2. You can’t find the right type of venue

You might find that any indoor venues are just not right for you. They are too traditional, too grand, or too modern.

With an outdoor wedding ceremony, nature is your canvas. You can’t get more personalised than that. But you still have a choice. Getting married outdoors means you can be a hippie / boho / festival as you like, or it can be as elegant as you dream.

You can chose a highly curated formal garden that makes you feel like the lord and lady of the manor, or you can feel free and free-spirited in a natural park or woodland.

There is a lot of choice no matter how elegant or understated you want your wedding is going to be.  it is much easier to find the perfect outdoor wedding ceremony space than indoor venue.

3. You can now have a legal outdoor wedding ceremony in England and Wales

You read that correctly! In 2021 a trial was run to allow all licensed venues in England and Wales to hold wedding and civil partnership outdoors.

This change has now been made permanent, meaning that even if the only ceremony space at your venue is indoors, you can still have a legal outdoor wedding or civil partnership ceremony in their garden.

You don’t even need a permanent structure anymore. All the bandstands and pergolas can be done away with.

You can get married anywhere in the grounds of a venue that is already licenced to hold weddings and civil partnerships, meaning the choice of what your ceremony space will look like is truly your choice for the first time ever.

More good news…

Unfortunately, venues still have to be licensed for weddings and civil partnerships in England and Wales by their local authority, but there is hope:

A Law Commission review is underway to look into (amongst other things) how to allow more venues to hold legal weddings and civil partnerships. It is expected to be published in July 2022.
